Commissioned first lieutenant on September 2, 1861, Anderson initially served as the adjutant of the 24th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.[1] He was appointed to Maj. Gen. John G. Foster's staff as an aide-de-camp and served with that officer for most of the war. Anderson received, in March 1865, the honorary rank of brevet brigadier general.
