George C. Rable is the Charles Summersell Professor of Southern History at the University of Alabama.[1] His 2002 book Fredericksburg! Fredericksburg!, is notable for winning the 2003 Lincoln Prize, a $50,000 award for excellence in Civil War scholarship.[2] The book is notable for retaining a traditional military analysis of the Civil War while exploring the social context and importance of the conflict.[3] The book was also awarded the Jefferson Davis Award and the Douglas Southall Freeman Award.[2][4] Rable's other books include The Confederate Republic: A Revolution Against Politics (1994) and Civil Wars: Women and the Crisis of Southern Nationalism (1989). His current research focuses on the role of religion in the Civil War.[1]
