The Battle of Rice's Station was a minor engagement in Appomattox Campaign of the American Civil War that was the immediate prelude to the Battle of Sayler's Creek. On April 6, 1865, Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet's command reached Rice's Station first and dug in, protecting the flank of the Army of Northern Virginia as it attempted to retreat across the High Bridge trestle. Union troops led by Maj. Gen. John Gibbon proceeded up the Southside Railroad from Burkeville towards High Bridge and encountered Longstreet's troops. A minor engagement ensued and very few casualties, Longstreet withdrew during the night towards Farmville as ordered by Gen'l Lee.
